After numerous treks by ourselves, my wife and I have recently completed the Annapurna Sanctuary trek with our two sons aged 11 and 8. It turned out even better than expected. Weather was great, the boys walked well and we all had a wonderful time. It seems to us that people who refuse to go to Nepal because it is currently "dangerous" are over-reacting to say the least. > > I did the Annapurna Circuit earlier in the year and had a great time with no hassles whatsoever. As far as we are concerned the most dangerous part of our holiday was the drive from Canberra to Sydney airport. To anyone contemplating a trek please GO. Do not be put off by talk of Maoist rebellion - they really are not interested in trekkers. Lodge owners, guides and porters are starting to struggle because trekker numbers are down by (my guess) 50-60%. > > On some nights we had a lodge to ourselves, and the busiest night we had was at Annapurna Base Camp where the lodge was half full. Because we had our children with us, we (for the first time) hired a guide and a porter and we are glad we did. If anyone out there wants the name of a good guide please email us at dixonpv@webone.com.au because the young man we had was, in our opinion, outstanding. > > You will not do better. Also, anyone thinking of going with their children feel free to contact us. It was a brilliant holiday and we plan to take the boys to Everest in April 2004. Once again, if you want to go to Nepal then do so. > > Is it safe? Of course it isn't safe - not 100% safe. Driving your car isn't safe, walking out the front door isn't safe, but a trek in Nepal is probably no less safe than going down the pub, riding your bike to work or traveling on a bus. JUST GO!!! > ----------------------------------------------- > Posted by Fellow Aussie on October 28, 2002 at 22:38:44 > > Great you had such an excellent time. What route did you take? How many days? Hope to take 8yo son in next few years. > > (Safety is on everyone's minds at moment but I have lost more friends, colleagues, local youths etc from motor vehicle accidents and suicides here in southern highlands than anywhere or by anything else... and it seems Australia has a bad track record with tourists here... not to dissaude would-be tourists but do take care especialy long distance travelling, surfing, swimmming holes and do follow the warning signs wrt crocodile infested waterholes etc.) > > 'Ashes' to remain downunder.... > ------------------------------------------------- > Posted by Paul on October 31, 2002 at 15:46:35: > > We took 12 nights/11days. Started at Naya Pul and walked the first day to Gandruk. It was hard going near the end, mostly because of the heat. Next day we made Chomrong - lots of ups and downs but plenty of VERY nice lodges to choose from. We got to Bamboo the next day. These first few days are tough, mainly because of the constant climbing from river valley to ridge then down to another river valley then up to another ridge. > > Our 8 year old did find this hard because his legs were a little too short for some of the stone steps. Night 4 was in Deurali at 3300m. We didn't want to go higher because it's around this altitude that altitude sickness kicks in. Many people go from Deurali direct to Annapurna Base Camp at 4130m and then complain because they get headaches. We chose to stay 2 nights at Machapuchare Base Camp at 3700m and during the day we went up to ABC then came back down to MBC for the night. > > The following day we went back to ABC and spent the night - no altitude problems at all. Going down we made Bamboo from ABC in one day and then Chomrong the next day. We then headed out via Landruk (one night) and Dhumpus. I'm glad we waited until our youngest was 8. To be honest, the Everest area is actually much easier walking - it's just the altitude that can cause problems. Facilities are fine, we had electricity and solar hot showers up to Bamboo. > > Posted by Paul on October 28, 2002 at 21:28:22: > > > >
